Fresh. — A creative and modern voice for Sonoma

I am the city council candidate who speaks for the present and coming generations in Sonoma – the ones who will be most affected by the decisions we make today. I bring an independent voice and a creative and modern approach to preserving and improving our quality of life, protecting our precious resources and historical heritage, and fostering our city’s entrepreneurial spirit and the success of our youth. I recognize the value of our businesses, our agriculture, our tourism, our rich history, and our quality of life, and I will work to find balance to ensure our community values live on while securing a prosperous future for Sonoma.

Experienced. — Local business owner with a background in law

I started my own business in Sonoma with a strong work ethic and a tight budget. I am also a licensed and practicing attorney. I will use my experience as a business owner and my background in law to find pragmatic solutions to our pressing issues, build bridges between opposing viewpoints, and encourage regulation that is easy to understand and efficient to implement. Permitting processes should be transparent and efficient, and I will work with staff to improve internal procedures and clarify city guidelines.

Committed. — Deeply rooted in the City of Sonoma

Some years ago, I found — and fell in love with — the City of Sonoma and the beautiful valley that surrounds it. I made the conscious decision to leave the corporate world and to join this community, start my business and build a life. It was the best decision I’ve made to date. I am running for public office because I love this city and this community, and I want it to be a place future generations will treasure as much as people do today.

Accessible. — Active community member and voice for your concerns

I am your voice in how our city is run. You’ll see me every week at the Tuesday night market and around the valley selling Southern cuisine with my business Drums & Crumbs. I’ll be riding my bike along our bike paths, enjoying the cultural events provided by so many of our talented local artists, and volunteering to make our city a better place. I am here to listen to your suggestions and concerns so that city time and resources are used to create and maintain the city where you want to live. A city councilperson is a public servant, and I am here to serve you.

Aware. — Concerned about our water supply and open spaces

I understand the critical concern about our water supply. I will actively support conservation efforts, research, and programs to protect this precious resource. As an avid cyclist, hiker and picnicker, I also support the preservation of the parks and open spaces in and around the city. I will work to protect treasured community assets like the Plaza, the bike path, the Montini Preserve and the Overlook Trail.

I am aware of our need for affordable housing, especially the need to protect our existing affordable senior housing and rental market and encourage the development of workforce housing. When our children come back after college to start their careers, there should be opportunities for them in Sonoma.

I am aware of how the City of Sonoma fits into the valley, the county and beyond. I have lived both in the Springs and within the Sonoma city limit, and I understand the working relationship between the city and the county-administered areas of our valley. Beyond our valley, I will be ready to represent the City of Sonoma on the many county and regional commissions on which our council members serve, and I will use my corporate and mediation experience to interact productively with the other decision makers on behalf of Sonoma.

With your support, I will bring a new perspective to the Sonoma City Council. I ask for your vote on November 4.

  1. Don’t get why somebody wants to run for a chance to get into this mess .Affordable housing ? Oh sure . If we work together and focus .Blah Blah Blah . What are we going to do to secure more water ? Let’s put in more water storage tanks and another reservoir ? Oh sure , that’ll happen . How about some more Hotels? At least two that we know of . That will bring water , housing .Hell no .More stuff for the city to manage .Illegals crowding existing housing ? Naa you can’t say that , it’s racist . You can have this job . best of luck , if you can get KB out of there , more power to you .

  2. Rachel I am impressed with your desire to hear from people and their concerns. I am a 30-year resident of Sonoma, retired, own a home, and live on a tight, fixed budget and oppose the water rates as currently proposed. I have changed my water use, purchased new appliances to assist in this effort and now feel I am being punished if the new rates are implemented. The different tiers are so unbalanced that it allows people who use the most to be rewarded while those of us who have already cut back as much as possible will be required to pay more. During the past couple of years I have been actively trying to figure out the tiers, how they were determined, why the service charge was omitted on the new billing system (it appears that “they” do not want the public to be well informed) and now the billing has been outsourced which has resulted in some errors. Before I cast my vote, I would like to know how you reached the conclusion to support these rates? Hopefully, the City Council will not act on this measure until the new Council is seated and if you are elected can I rely on your support in dealing with this issue and my concerns? Thank you for a timely response. Ruth Plagge, 224 Fine Avenue, Sonoma, CA 95476 707-935-1469.
